Documentary depicting the lives of six Japanese craftsmen
Since ancient times, there have been people who are connected to nature and create things putting “LIVES” in them with the tremendous skills and spirits.
They are called “craftsmen,” who sharpen their physical senses and perform their work with unparalleled precision.
In this age of digital society, where technology is advancing at an ever-increasing pace, people rely solely on the value of visible materials, and have severed their connection with nature,
Our lives, which have severed our connection with nature, have caused serious environmental destruction of the earth and are now on the verge of crisis.
At the dawn, six ambitious traditional Japanese craftsmen have risen up.
Carving, dyeing, forging, weaving, folding, and tying.
The six craftsmen create their works under the theme of harmony.
The camera follows the creative process over a period of about three years, gets closer to the site of craftsmanship and sees they’re putting the “SOULS” in the crafts.
The problems of modern society gradually emerge from the omnibus stories. The never-ending human conflicts. The significance of one’s own existence being questioned by the world. The various difficulties they face ignite the rebellious spirit of these craftsmen.
Can we, the human race, regain our spirit, harmonize with nature, and pass the sustainable planet to the next generation?
This film shows the ways of lives that six artisans experience. Through their struggles and sorrows, each of them found a ray of light each.
This is the vivid documentary film about people who “live their mission”.
We are being influenced.
This film is a documentary on traditional Japanese craftsmen, exploring the spirit and techniques of artisans who have nurtured their craft in harmony with nature over a long history, and the essence of such wisdom as “body intelligence” and “connection with the invisible” that lies hidden within these techniques.
How should we modern people live in today’s chaotic society?
And how do we face the world in this time of explosive technological evolution that is changing society?
We believe that the experience, wisdom, culture, and spirit that humanity has accumulated will provide us with the direction and guidance for our next path.
What is “human”? What is the essence of “life” and “living”?
Our goal is to make a documentary film that confronts the “present” through the eyes of craftsmen, overlapping it with the ongoing direction of humankind.
Highlight 1
The Sword of Prayer and Determination
The “sword” mentioned in the title was used in ancient Japan not as a weapon but for sacred rituals as an incantation for prayer.
In the past, the sword smith also served as a shaman who inhabited the spirit, and was a professional and sacred worker who handled various elements such as fire, water, earth, and wind, which were necessary for the smelting of iron.
Mr. Nezu, one of the artisans, creates a real sword, a sword of resolve for the world of harmony.
Prayers are now being gathered on this planet, which is undergoing a change into a new era, a modern society in conflict and turmoil.
Where are we headed?
What is the path humanity should take? What is the resolve contained in the “Sword”?
Highlight 2
The Story of the Soul of a Craftsman’s Life
Sword smiths, stencil carvers, tatami mat makers, Nishijin brocade weavers, indigo-dyed fan makers, linen makers. This documentary offers a glimpse into the individuality and way of life of these artisans.
In a modern technological society, these craftspeople are the opposite of the modern technology.
There are people called artisans whose work involves honing their own bodies and senses and confronting nature.
The skills and spirit of these artisans, their physical senses, are the ultimate analog. These senses are imbued with immeasurable intelligence, which we call bodily intelligence.
What is it that we are losing?
The DNA of craftsmanship within the artisan.
The sense of creating something with one’s own hands.
The joy of creation. The state of selflessness. The essence of reality.
Highlight 3
All things in the forest and the voice of life
The country was once called Hinomoto. In this country, there is a belief in eight million gods, who are believed to dwell in all things.
The Japanese culture loves and respects not only flowers and plants, but also all things inanimate and animate, and all things that exist in the world, seeing “life” in all things.
The love for the richness of nature that abounds in the Japanese climate.
Praise to the great nature that nurtured harmony.
Everything exists from the beginning just as it is.
Nature is calling to you.
Can you feel the “voice of life”?
